Today I am 28. So I’ve picked 28 images from over the past few years.

I’ve started with earlier images that you would normally have to look up in the archives, or scroll pages and pages back to get to; More recent ones are down the bottom of the post. I’ve tried to pick a range of different work, plus some of my favorites – It actually took a bit of effort to weed it down to just 28…. Hmmm, where has all this work come from, I don’t think I realised how much has accumulated over the past few years! Enjoy.

I heart DC x Royalefam Skate comp

So up in Auckland on the 11th November 2009, DC Shoes and Loaded presented the Asia-Pacific launch of the newDC x Royalefam collection designed by renowned Singaporean sneaker artist SBTG .

In conjunction with the event and to celebrate the role of collaboration in culture, DC selected 20 artists from around NZ and Australia to participate in an art competition. The selected artists used a blank skateboard deck as their canvas to create their own unique artworks for the show, and I was one of em.

Here are some shots from the night!

My board placed third, which was pretty cool – but the best part was being part of a collaborative exhibition with the likes of Component and Enforce 1 from Cut collective, Teva Chonen, Gene Kirkpatrick and Liam Gerrard. Decks were all of really high quality.

Step by step progress of Skate deck for DC x Loaded comp

So I submitted five images chosen from each of my categories in ‘Grouped work’ for an upcoming competition in Auckland put on by Loaded store for DC Shoes… Low and behold I was picked as one of 20 artists to participate in the competition with the end result being a group show in Auckland for the launch of a new sneaker DC have put out.

The support I have been given to work with is a skate deck… a beautiful board by Plan B.

I have about 3 1/2 weeks to complete this project – inc. travel back and fourth of the boards from New Zealand to Melbourne and back to New Zealand again. ….Luckily for me I have a friend coming to visit who I have managed to weasel into becoming a mule for my board to travel over here with!

This is the step by step process I have gone through to create this deck :

Board to start with… 7 1/2 deck from fast times in Melbourne.

All taped up waiting for glue to dry w initial layer vintage wallpaper

Topside of board w vintage wallpaper, tape still on while glue dries - overnight cure time, full cures in 48 hrs

Tape off and Wallpaper trimmed. Beautiful thing with this board is that up close you can see the diff layers of wood layered together, so was able to trim all the way round evenly

Reverse side of board masked on sides and under edges so that I don't paint in the wrong place!

Mask on, ready to start painting

First layer of paint… just applied, so is shiny, will dull down to matt once dried

Top layers of paint, I decided the initial indigo was too dark, so went for more of a duck egg blue/ grey. Board then got highlights in soft grey and cream on top of this - I wiped it on with a dry rag so that it just hits the top embossing of paper

Test image laid out on top of board - This was so that I could work out position, a lot of edging got cut off, worked out where to place the cut windows to best compliment the background pattern

Lightened it up heaps w another layer of soft duck egg blue/ grey + layers of a dove grey, cream and white as highlights.

Sexy sexy finished board w super-shiny resin topcoat poured on and dry.

… I found it generated a lot of interest in people viewing it, they all wanted to touch and stroke it, my friend Ana even commented that the glossy resin made her want to lick it – it has a kind of lolly look to it, like clear toffee!
